Al-Ahli Saudi FC is a Saudi football club based in Jeddah, founded in 1937. Nicknamed Al-Raqi, meaning the distinguished one, they play in green and white and share both their city and their stadium with Al-Ittihad, their historic rival.

Relegation, immediate return, then Asia
The recent history of the club is the most eventful of the four leading Saudi sides. Relegated to the second tier at the end of the 2021-22 season, Al-Ahli came straight back up by winning the second division title, then rebuilt at speed.
That return was followed by heavy recruitment in the summer of 2023, as the club passed under the control of the Public Investment Fund. Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy and Franck Kessie were among the players who arrived in that window.
The peak came in 2025, when Al-Ahli won the AFC Champions League, the first major continental title in their history, only two years after playing in the second tier.
A club with a long tradition
Before that run, Al-Ahli were known above all for their consistency in domestic cups, with a long list of King’s Cup and Crown Prince Cup wins. The league title, by contrast, long escaped them: their championships can be counted on one hand, the most recent dating from the 2015-16 season.
The Jeddah derby
The meeting with Al-Ittihad is one of the oldest fixtures in Saudi football. The two clubs were founded in Jeddah nine years apart and now share the same ground, which makes the tie one of the most closely followed in the kingdom.
The name and the identity
Al-Ahli means the national one, a name shared by clubs across the Arab world, from Cairo to Dubai and Doha. The Jeddah side is distinguished by its green and white, colours that have stayed unchanged through the club’s history and that supporters use as shorthand for the team.
The club has long drawn support from beyond its own city, helped by cup runs and by a reputation for attacking football. That base explains how quickly the ground filled again after the return to the top flight.
